AJ!!!
You went and visited BELL'S Mars Hill Church?!?!

Dude, I hope you realize that on Thursday night, last week, I was bashing Mark DRISCOLL, from Seattle Mars Hill (no relation). I love Bell. I mean, he's a shameless hipster - but so am I, so no judgment.

I get a kick out of Bell. His books could go a little deeper, for my taste, but his style is certainly befitting the culture at hand.

No, no, no, I have no problem with Bell at all. One of many bright spots in the Emergent conversation if you ask me.

Mark Driscoll is a woman-hating, homo-fearing closet-fundamentalist (perhaps... mmmm... even more in the closet than that??) who thinks swearing, drinking beer and lighting candles makes him relevant.

Ok, I have to e-mail you now, in case you think I was bashing Bell's church.

AJ, yup you got your pictrure with Jurgy and mine did not make:(. But the memories, oh the memories! Remember when we were having breakfast in the hotel lobby and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted him! Then we proceeded to act like teen girls who just saw the Jonas Brothers...

I just have a thing for eminently thoughtful Christians.

AJ, great thoughts! I too will have a blog up on the book soon. Zondervan sent me an advanced copy and it has taken me a while to gather my thoughts. Most people will be troubled by Bell's exegesis because they are beholden to modernist exegetical, historical-critical methods. Most evangelicals have been trained against understanding the Scriptures as a dynamic narrative rooted in the Jewish world. Most evangelicals are to individualistic in their exegesis. Both Walter Breuggemann and Tom Wright gave the book highest marks as a popular theological work. The two foremost biblical theologians in the world and both evangelicals.

Read the book a few weeks ago...and I'll probably blog through it over Christmas break. My initial thoughts are that it is a great book. He develops the mentality of the Bible being a story and us playing a role in that same story. And he develops that well. I have some issues with Bell previously and even some issues with his exegesis within Scriptures used, but overall it is a great book.
